UAW, GM, and Congressional Conflicts?
Some members of the Maryland congressional delegation are set to question Toyota executives about the recent safety issues and recalls the company has endured.
Toyota faces this questioning from congressional members who have received frequent and recent contributions from the United Auto Workers (UAW), which happens to be a major stockholder of General Motors (GM) and a major competitor of Toyota. Additionally, Toyota operates five plants in the United States in which the UAW has failed to unionize the workforce.
Specifically, Maryland Congressmen Van Hollen (D) and Cummings (D) as members of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform may participate in the questioning of Toyota executives.
OpenSecrets.org reports the following UAW contributions to Maryland congressional members in the 2010 election cycle.

Sen. Cardin was named the most liberal senator in 2009 by the National Journal. Cardin tied three other senators for the top “honor”. Maryland’s senior Senator Barbara Milkuski did not slouch too far behind her Maryland counterpart by placing in eighth spot on the most liberal list.

Rep. Kratovil recently stated, in regard to the continuing effort of Democrat leaders to pass a massive overhaul of the US health care system, that “This system is broken; we have to do something,” … “But my preference would be to do smaller things.”

In a news release Sen. Mikulski said she is “looking forward to a vigorous campaign” and announced her campaign team. The announcement quells rumors that the soon to be 74 year old Senator, who has held a seat in Congress for over 34 years, was planning to retire.

Rep. Donna Edwards (D) is proposing a constitutional amendment in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court’s ruling declared that restrictions placed on corporations and unions, that prohibited them from paying directly for television political advertisements in days leading up to an election, were against free speech and therefore unconstitutional.
Edwards (D) urging for a new Constitutional amendment that would allow Congress to restrict the speech of corporate entities expressed her concern that corporations could work to defeat her in an election.
if the [corporations] don’t like what this congresswoman is doing, they’ll just forget the voters, buy TV ads, send robocalls, send a lot of mail, and beat her in November. A law won’t fix this; we have to fix it in the Constitution. So today I’ll introduce a constitutional amendment so that we the people can take back our elections and our democracy.

Sen. Mikulski in a quip to reporters lamented that she had not gotten money for Maryland in exchange for her yea vote on the Senate Health Care bill.
“I know I’m not as important as Senator Nelson. I didn’t get the money for my state. I was too stupid.”
